What to do When IoT Steals Your Job

We’re all familiar with the sentiment that new technological advances could signal the loss of jobs, so it’s understandable that people are concerned with what the Internet of Things (IoT) means for their current position. Will automation of warehouse and manufacturing jobs put thousands out of employment?

The short answer? Yes.

Don’t panic yet. While IoT will automate many jobs that are repetitive in nature, it will also create new, exciting jobs that pay better!

Positions are already opening up thanks to IoT, like the Web Development Engineer – Internet of Things position with Amazon.

The job description acknowledges the endless possibilities of IoT, explaining that, “IoT systems consist of physical devices, from cars, light bulbs, sensor grids, and more, that connect to the Internet. There will be 50 billion connected devices in 2020 if current trends continue, and any device that consumes electricity can become connected. AWS IoT is a managed cloud platform that lets these connected devices easily and securely interact with cloud applications and other devices.”

Amazon isn’t the only one hiring IoT professionals. IBM, Sonsoft Inc., Deloitte, Accenture, Verizon, and many other companies are already adding these positions. Job opportunities will only continue to expand from here.

So, if you’re currently in a job that could become automated in the next few years, what should you do? One solution is information technology (IT) certification, which can give you job-ready skills in a short period of time, and is often much cheaper than a traditional four year degree. Certification will help you get your foot in the door, and work experience can quickly move you into upper level positions.

A typical pathway for people that are new to IT starts with a computer repair or helpdesk position, and eventually leads to system analyst or engineering careers.
